Dartington Hall 始建於1388-1400年間，為 Richard II 同母異父兄弟 John Holand, Earl of Huntingdon 屬地。1400 年 John Holland 被砍頭處死後，1559年 Dartington 被 Sir Arthur Champernowne 買下，而後該家族於此地居住長達336年之久。
1925年Leonard 和 Dorothy Elmhirst 買下 Dartington Hall 時，整個建築幾乎已經搖搖欲墜。Leonard and Dorothy 重新整修建築體，重建 Great Hall 巨大木造屋頂，並於 1935年設立 The Dartington Hall Trust。
The Dartington Trust 現今營運16個不同非營利活動，包括The Dartington International Summer School 和 Schumacher Environmental College。除了發展推廣教育活動以外，也充作其他團體活動場地。
